"False Hearted Lover's Blues" by Dock Boggs
Banjo Heritage 👉 Patreon.com/CliftonHicks
I learned "False Hearted Lover's Blues" from a 1927 recording of Moran Lee "Dock" Boggs. The melody is borrowed from the earlier ballad, "Hustling Gamblers," also known as "Country Blues." Other notable recordings have been contributed by Ralph Stanley, Levon Helm, Riley Baugus, and Hank III.
False hearts have been my downfall
Pretty women have been my craze,
I'm sure my false-hearted lover
Will lay me in my lonesome grave.
They'll bite the hand that feeds them
Spend all the money you can save,
From your heart strings weave silk garters
Build a dog house on your grave.
Ragged clothes falling from my body
The wolves howling 'round my door,
Let the man who loves my darling girl
Feel the bite of of my forty-four.
Corn whisky has ruined my body
These women is a wearing on my mind,
I've traveled this wide world over
Peace on earth I cannot find.
When my earthly stay is over
Sink my dead body in the sea,
Go and tell my false-hearted lover
That the whales will fuss over me.

Join us on Patreon 👉 Patreon.com/CliftonHicks I learned "Little Grey Mule" (Little Gray Mule) from a 1950s recording of Roscoe Halcomb. In the recording, Halcomb mentions that an older person in his community knew this tune as "The Wild Boar." My first instrument is a 1910 Weymann "Keystone State" banjo tuned ~ fB♭FB♭C; second instrument: 5-string mountain banjo handmade by myself (same tuning)...

Did you get this banjo back or is this an old video? This looks like that old banjo you had a while back that you sold on consignment for that guy that choked on a sausage.
Thanks Clifton Hicks. Is that nylon strings?
Maybe it's just your accent, but I get Nicholas Cage in Lord of War Describing the AK47.
Beautiful playing
Are you a fan of Toby Turner? You should collab with him, he loves writing republican songs, he did CROSSBUSCUS! You could do CLIFTBUSCUS if you collabed with him. WEEEEEEEEEW
Pick up your boy, put him on your back. Great song and history
Good as Bascom Lamar Lunsford....sounds awesome...
Thanks a lot.

hey man, if you've got any other sources (books, internet, whatever) about WV mountain banjos, I'd love to learn more. I just made my first one and my family in WV was super stoked about it.
'*'🤙❤️🎉'*' . For ALL to Hear, . (Banjo😅) Gott'i'*Good Singer🎶YOU/ 'i'n 'in' Spirit 🦸*
We definitely need a tutorial/tab for this version of cackling hen!
Hey Clifton! Are you in Sandy River Belle tuning and downtuned like you do? Thanks
fDGCD tuned down somewhere
I'm pretty sure I single handedly boosted the hell out of your Cumberland Gap videos this week. Also, prior to this week I didn't even know this song, but it felt weird when I realized Old Crow Medicine Show played this but changed the words for their song Carry Be Back. On one hand they're keeping old tunes alive. On the other it feels kind of dirty.
Old Crow has been ass since Willie left.
gotta bring the skull face paint back man, that was sooo good
Banjo is the best instrument This is so beautiful and soothing !
wow that b part is so purdy! love that there are a million ways to play this tune
Feeling nostalgic for those steel strings Clif?
They are cool. I want a big bluegrass banjo.
Maybe I've missed it in a video, do you ever look at folksong collections? I've found some fun stuff that way. It's interesting how many tunes share lyrics.
How did you tune your banjo on death and the lady? Also you're the most underrated of on this app I LOVE ur music. My ancestors are from Ireland and west virginia, coal miners from deep Appalachia. Your music inspires me to work and to appreciate history god bless you brotha!
"Death and the Lady" is f♯DGAD dropped two or three frets. I have the tab with exact tuning at Patreon.com/CliftonHicks
On repeat 💚
The old 'uns are the best. 💪🏻
This man is out here trying to keep our heritage alive and yall want to clown on his mask. Go bother someone else.
I have a question. Is it hard or at all challenging to play your banjo with those gloves on?
Yes. I recommend gloves a size smaller than you'd normally wear.
Gave me chills
I am an old time fiddler and man, I couldn't disagree with you more. You're saying that playing the music of Ed Haley, JP Fraley, Clyde Davenport, John Salyer, and yes, Tommy Jarrell amounts to playing music from New York City?? I guess the Ballad of Kyle Rittenhouse is an old traditional song, right?
Oo how authentic you must be from Appalachia
@@CliftonHicksbanjo Your sarcastic remark proves you're just trying to stir people up with your opinionated diatribe about what is and what isn't "authentic". Nobody I know thinks less of a fellow musician because they happen to be a local "hillbilly". Hell, I am a local "hillbilly!" You're trying to divide people, not bring them together in the true spirit of music. Too much division is being preached in our country these days and you are following suit. Who gives a shit whether someone is from New York City or Marshall, NC., if they are into the music, as everyone in my old time jam are. We have people from all over the country and all political persuasions, but we come together as friends on jam night.
Greatest From Germany!!!!
Greatest from Germany!Alles für Deutschland!!!!Und Texas,,,,,,,
Hitler is dead, reich has been destroyed by Russian Red army.
Grüße meine Familie in Texas!!!
Though I am not your family, I wish you lonely peace and love.
Now I know where Floyd Rose got the idea for the guitar adjustable bridge 🤔
It's clawhammer blend !
Came here to learn about clawhammer banjo, what are you talking about which term should be used, for you have blue hair. Privk......
But should we even call it "clawhammer banjo?"
Folks, Clifton’s music is on Spotify and other streaming services.
Dang great idea
Wish I could've heard the reason why is doesn't use one
youre one the greats keeping this alive my pawpaw would have loved to hear you play!!❤
Yea, that whole case is a cluster. Not surprising anyone would have trouble with that tune technicallyor otherwise. Black Pilled on Odessee has a really good & accurate video on the account.
All these years later; it still cuts bone deep.
, I'm looking for measured drawings or just some measurements for a Boucher 1840s banjo with the OG neck where can I find that thanks in advance
We have at least two Patreon members who own original Boucher banjos. One of them has made plans of his. Patreon.com/CliftonHicksBanjo
Could Mr. Birchfield be compared to Johnny Ramone as far as that hard driving rhythm playing?
❤George Gibson❤
That banjo sounds pure. That's a true feat when you consider that if played by a beginner, it can sound worse than bagpipes.
That’s mountain music folks, don’t get no better. Thank you SIR.
The fact your still running around this comment section proves you're one of the few worth a durn.
Please more basic stuff
Not even American and I was Yeehawing to this.
